The holiday season is a magical time of year. Many people put up beautiful Christmas decorations all over their homes, but why stop there? You can also decorate your shed for the holidays! It’s an easy and fun way to bring holiday cheer to the outside.
Here are 10 easy but effective ways to decorate your shed for Christmas. If you get creative, you can turn your shed into a winter wonderland that looks like it belongs in a holiday movie.
Choose Festive Lighting
One of the fastest and easiest ways to get in the Christmas spirit is to put up lights. Twinkling lights instantly make any space more magical. Choose holiday string lights, spotlights, or solar lights for your shed. You can decorate the inside or draw lines around the windows and doorway on the outside.
You can also hang icicle lights along the edge of the roof to make a beautiful statement. Use amber or white lights for a warm glow, or switch between the two. Make sure the lights can be used outside and are safe to do so.
Add a Tree or Wreath
What’s Christmas without a beautifully decorated tree or wreath? Adorn your shed with a tiny tree, or hang a gorgeous wreath on the door to greet guests with some holiday cheer. Go for a real Christmas tree or wreath if your shed will protect it from wind and harsh weather.
For lower maintenance, choose an artificial tree or wreath made of PVC or plastic. Opt for one with pinecones, berries and other natural details for a realistic look. Light it up with string lights at night for even more magic!
Display Seasonal Decorations
Don’t be afraid to deck out your shed’s interior with all kinds of Christmas decor. Garlands, ribbons, ornaments, stockings, snow globes – anything goes! For the exterior, stick to decorations made to withstand the elements like wreaths, outdoor string lights and window decals.
You can also decorate the shed’s surroundings. Place miniature trees along the pathway, line the roof edge with garland, or position light-up deer and snowmen on the lawn. Have fun decorating any way you like!
Add a Pop of Red
The traditional Christmas colors are green from the trees and plants and red from berries, flowers and Santa’s suit. Use red accents in your shed’s decor to really emphasize the holiday season.
Ribbons, poinsettias, candles and throw pillows in red are perfect. You can also paint a vintage sled or wheelbarrow red and place it outside. For a more natural touch, incorporate red winter berries into your decor. Let red really pop against the shed’s neutral colors.
Incorporate Plaid and Tartan
Plaid and tartan prints are ideal for giving your shed a cozy cabin feel. Use red and green plaid blankets, pillows, tablecloths and other decor items. Tartan is another print that evokes the holidays.
You can also make DIY plaid bows or garlands for your shed using craft felt or fabric. Hang a big plaid wreath on the exterior door for a warm welcome. These classic prints will make your shed merry and bright!
Display Vintage Holiday Pieces
For a nostalgic vibe in your shed, decorate with vintage holiday finds. Look for old-fashioned postcards, ornaments, toys, stockings, metal signs and more at flea markets and antique shops. Display these items on shelves, hang them on the walls or place them on side tables.
Vintage sleds, trucks and snow gear also make fun decorative accents when placed outside the shed. Take a trip down memory lane with your vintage Christmas decorations. Your shed will tell a beautiful holiday story!
Add Natural Elements
For an outdoorsy Christmas decor style, incorporate natural elements like pinecones, branches, berries, pine boughs and fresh greenery. Gather these items on walks or from your own yard. Arrange them in vases, wreaths and centerpieces.
Wrap string lights around birch logs or branches to make whimsical tree sculptures. Place pine cones and berries in galvanized buckets, wooden crates or wheelbarrows for organic holiday decor. Let nature inspire your shed’s decorations.
Use Winter-Inspired DIYs
Get into the holiday spirit by crafting some easy Christmas decorations for your shed! Ideas include: making mini trees out of stacked books, painting pine cones metallic colors for ornaments, folding old book pages into snowflakes, and filling jars with shiny candy canes.
You can also stamp burlap with snowflakes, cut out paper stars, or make tiny stockings out of felt. Get the whole family involved in creating special handmade decor items for your magical shed.
Add Warm and Cozy Textiles
Rugs, blankets, pillows and soft fabrics will add comfort and coziness to your shed for Christmas. Toss fleece blankets over chairs, add a braided rug on the floor, and fill a bench with plush pillows. Use textiles in rich colors like red, green and gold.
You can also hang knit stockings on the walls or interior door for a warm touch. Consider covering tabletops with snowy-white tablecloths or runners to enhance the wintery feel. Layers of soft textiles will keep your shed comfy and bright.
Incorporate Rustic Elements
The rustic farmhouse style is very fitting for a cozy Christmas shed. Think wood crates, galvanized buckets, burlap bags, vintage tins, and distressed metal signs. Arrange pinecones, nuts and berries in galvanized containers.
Hang a burlap stocking on a ladder backed with pine branches. Use chalkboard paint to create your own custom holiday signs. Stack old wooden sleds or snowshoes outside as unique lawn decorations. Let your shed reflect a vintage, down-home holiday spirit.
Light Up the Pathway
To spread the Christmas magic all around your shed, illuminate the surrounding area. Line the entry path to your shed with small spotlights or solar-powered stakes. You can also use lanterns, votives or candles if they’ll be sheltered from wind and weather.
Twinkling string lights wrapped around posts or lanterns hung from shepherd hooks will also light the way with holiday cheer. Make sure any electrical lights you use outdoors are rated safe for wet conditions. A glowing pathway invites winter wonder!
The holidays transform everything with sparkling magic. Use these fun ideas to deck out your shed with Christmas spirit inside and out. Let your creativity run wild and have fun planning your own cozy Christmas shed decor! With a little imagination, you can easily turn your shed into a winter wonderland.

nativity scene for the front window
Hubby built this rustic nativity scene for our home a couple of years ago. It has been on our front porch and under our tree.
This year I decided that it could be a lovely addition to the garden shed. I stacked a small footstool on top of the dirt sink just inside the front window to raise up the nativity.
The light bulb illuminates the scene and shows up so well at night! I have it plugged into a timer too.

You may have noticed that the cute Christmas trees are sitting on top of some used bistro shares that I got for $20 while thrift shopping.
They raise the trees to a perfect height to flank either side of the garden shed. The wired ribbon adds just enough shimmer for a holiday aesthetic.
A pair of ice skates sits outside of the front door waiting for a pond to freeze. That might take a while in Delaware because our winters aren’t usually cold enough to freeze the lakes and ponds nearby. But a girl can dream, right?
My little frog friend is a recent find. I didn’t want to put him away just yet, so I gave him some shiny ribbon to make him look festive!
I also used a wrought iron flag holder to hold a thrifted wire basket of burlap and plastic ornaments that I purchased for a couple of dollars while out thrift shopping.

One of my favorite things about this garden shed is that we can see it from inside our home. The lights will be such an enjoyment as we peak outside on a cold winter night.
The lighted garland, wreath, and Christmas trees made decorating this garden shed so easy!
